As Nowruz celebrations took place in many regions with the arrival of spring, T\u00dcMATA (the Group for the Research and Promotion of Turkish Music) also brought a \u201cConcert of Love, Friendship, and Healing: From the Altai Mountains to Anatolia\u201d to <\/strong>the people of Ankara on March 17, 2018<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The concert took place at the Turkish-Russian Friendship House in the Hamam\u00f6n\u00fc Mansions, located in Ankara\u2019s most historic district, which operates as the sole representative of the St. Petersburg Artists\u2019 Union with the full moral support of the Russian Embassy.<\/p>\n

The Historic Mansion hosted a large number of art lovers from Ankara at a concert organized by Er\u015fan \u00c7\u0131rak, a member of T\u00fcmata.<\/p>\n

Believing that music is both a unifying element of national culture and one of the most important tools for passing it on to future generations, Assistant Professor Dr. Rahmi Oru\u00e7 G\u00fcven\u00e7, who has dedicated his life to this cause, the T\u00dcMATA ensemble\u2014which he founded and directs\u2014presented a concert featuring diverse melodies from the Turkic peoples and communities of Central Asia, while also incorporating the traditional Turkish musical repertoire, rhythms, and instruments. Like a caravan traveling along the Silk Road, the concert touched the hearts of the audience with different melodies at various stops. <\/p>\n

Guests were welcomed with the piece \u201cSamav\u0131r,\u201d<\/strong> by the \u0130dil-Ural Turks, which describes the tea served to guests. The theme of friendship was explored through \u201cDostum,\u201d<\/strong> another song by the \u0130dil-Ural Turks. With her voice, as soothing as water, G\u00fclten Urall\u0131 performed \u201cTugan Av\u0131l,\u201d<\/strong> an \u0130dil-Ural folk song, taking the audience back to their birthplace. This was followed by \u201cBu Bah\u00e7e,\u201d<\/strong>known to belong to the Uyghur-Kazakh Turks, which<\/strong>featured the pleasant, call-and-response singing between young women and men. Later, \u201cTansamal\u0131m\u201d<\/strong> \u2014another song belonging to the Kazakh Turks and meaning \u201cGentle Breeze\u201d\u2014was performed. \u201cG\u00fcl\u00e7emen,\u201d<\/strong> a piece belonging to the Uyghur Turks that tells of love in a flower garden, was performed by Azize G\u00fcven\u00e7 with her captivating voice and delivery, while Emre Ba\u015faran and \u015e\u00f6hret Nurmuhammed accompanied the song with their traditional dances and performances. The song \u201cCene\u015fe,\u201d<\/strong> in which a young musician expresses his joy in a message to his aunt, also thrilled the audience with its lively and cheerful melody. The song \u201cDostluk C\u0131r\u0131,\u201d<\/strong> with lyrics and music by the late Rahmi Oru\u00e7 G\u00fcven\u00e7, also contained a prayer and a wish: The song conveyed the hope that it would spread from friend to friend, that friendship would bring joy to hearts, that distances would be bridged, that hearts would be filled with light, and that everyone would find peace and harmony\u2014and the joy and pride that come from this. The Tuva and Mongolian song \u201c\u015eu\u201d<\/strong> reminded us of the caravan continuing on its journey and<\/strong> the voices that had joined it. <\/p>\n

The goal of treatment is to enter a trance through \u201cBaks\u0131\u201d<\/strong> \u2014the oldest known form of music and movement therapy\u2014and establish a connection with \u201cataruhu.\u201d Azize G\u00fcven\u00e7 performed an example of a Baks\u0131 dance accompanied by improvised music. The dance, which the audience found quite intriguing and captivating, was accompanied by the dombra, the \u015fankob\u0131z, and the sound of water. <\/p>\n

Following the Baks\u0131 dance, \u201cHicaz Dua\u201d<\/strong>\u2014with choreography by H. Fahreddin Dede and music by Ahmet Hatipo\u011flu\u2014was performed by Derya \u00c7\u0131nar Oral in a way that touched the most tender parts of our hearts and brought tears to our eyes.<\/p>\n

Fatma Dikilita\u015f performed and sang \u201cDostum,\u201d<\/strong> a song by A\u015f\u0131k Veysel, one of Anatolia\u2019s most remarkable poets and musicians.<\/p>\n

At the end of the concert, five beautiful pieces of Turkish Sufi music were performed.<\/p>\n
