The effects of Turkish music modes on human psychology and physiology have been studied for centuries, and this treasure of knowledge has reached the present day.
Our esteemed master, ethnomusicologist, and music therapist Dr. Rahmi Oruç Güvenç leads our Tümata Group, which will perform the traditional form of music therapy that was practiced during the era of healing establishments with Traditional Receptive Turkish Maqam Music Therapy Session at Youniverse Yoga studio in Istanbul on December 8, 2024.
The benefits of the Ancient Central Asia and Turkish Modal Music Healing Tradition are vast, and some of these benefits include:
- Modal Music and Meditative Music generate a desire for balance and harmony.
- Calms brain waves.
- Affects breathing.
- Reduces tensions, increases mobility and skill.
- Affects body temperature.
- Regulates stress hormones.
- Strengthens the body’s self-defense mechanism.

- Enhances our ability to learn and retain information.
- In the Receptive Music Therapy Tradition session, participants listen to music played in a reclining position with their heads towards the musicians. This performance instance, conducted according to the principles of Ancient Turkish Music and Healing Tradition, cannot be replicated.
- As mentioned in the literature, the appropriate mode is selected based on the day of the week and the time of day, and an improvised performance is realized using ancient Turkish instruments such as “Çeng, Dombra, Ney, Istanbul Kemençesi, Keman, Ud, Kopuz, Rübab, Water sound, Gubuz.”
